SO, PLEASE REUP - D'Angelo - Voodoo (2000). Being essentially a one-off for neo-soul music (his first album doesn't count, as it does not even come close), Voodoo is an obvious candidate for the best R&B album of the era and a testament to the possibilities of music being just so goddamn beautiful that you could cry. Quincy Jones with the best musicians couldn't have come up with better. On tracks like "The Root," I find myself with jaw dropped, completely in awe at the arrangements of lead and especially backup vocals what's even more amazing is that, as D'Angelo himself was probably fairly intoxicated during much of the recording of the album, much of that stuff sounds like it is probably ad-libbed. The instrumentation is immaculate, the boom-bap beats are as perfect as anyone could hope for, and D's vocals are just out of this world. On Voodoo, D'Angelo was surely a vessel for some amazing, mindblowing beauty that transcends himself, ?uestlove, J Dilla, James Poyser, Roy Hargrove and whoever else performed on this album. Without a doubt, this album has some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. "Africa" (D'Angelo/Archer/Thompson/Stone) - 6:13 "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" (D'Angelo/Saadiq) - 7:10ġ3. With the first single, "Untitled" (How Does It Feel), ranking #1, he hits the road on an explosive National tour, having it followed by the launch of a European tour.ġ.

With the January 2000 release of his his much anticipated followup, Voodoo, D'Angelo further establishes himself as a Neo-soul icon as the album reaches #1 on the Billboard charts. Quickly the buzz grew to deafening levels and in 1995, Brown Sugar hit the streets. In 1994, D'Angelo co-wrote and co-produced the stirring anthem "U Will Know" which was the lead off single from the Jason's Lyric Soundtrack. In 1991 D'Angelo was signed to a publishing deal, which would eventually lead to his recording deal with the now defunct EMI Records. A record exec was impressed with I.D.U's tracks and asked to meet the man behind them. It was through a demo tape of that now forgotten act that D'Angelo first caught the ears of the industry. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son and grandson of preachers, D'Angelo showed precocious musical talent as a small child and began playing piano at the age of five.īy the time he hit 18, D'Angelo was a three time Amateur Night at the Apollo winner and a member of a rap act called I.D.U. It was clear from the jump that there was something about D'Angelo.
